Ideas To Make Your Kitchen Seem More Spacious
by Steve Gilman, Operations/Project Manager, Builder Specialties Kitchen & Bath
Many homes have kitchens designed for one cook. Check out these tips on how to maximize the space in your kitchen regardless of its size.
Elegant Cabinet Storage
Daily routines or any task becomes a breeze when everything has a location and is easy to access. However, many lower base cabinets are deep and difficult to reach into, especially in corners. You can make the most of your cabinetry with some great storage solutions. This can include a pull-out trash/recycling bin or drawers for pots and pans in place of lower cabinets so your items can come to you without you having to move items to get to the item you want. Or a lazy susan or blind base cabinet with pull-out storage to turn corner space into functional storage.
Great Things Come In Small Packages
It can be a challenge to become a minimalist when there are so many different kitchen gadgets you would love to have. Whether it’s a cappuccino maker or a new stand mixer in your favorite color. Unfortunately, a smaller kitchen may not be able to efficiently store these items, which will make your kitchen less functional. It may be necessary to remove these items and decide what to keep and what to discard. If it is something you use every day, it may work well to store it on your countertop. But if it’s something you use only occasionally, it may be time to put it in the giveaway pile or store it some other way.
Enhance Your View
A smaller kitchen can feel less restricted when you have elements in place that expand your view. For example, if you have a kitchen that has views into your dining or living room, try to keep that open by working with your kitchen designer. Another way to increase your view is to have open shelves or glass doors on select cabinets that show the size of your space.
Use Your Walls
Any unused wall space in your kitchen can be a place to expand storage. You can use hooks or even ceiling-mounted racks to hang pots and pans. You can also use this space to hang a shelf to hold extra dishware, bulk ingredients, and other supplies. Floating shelves are a great idea that is both functional and looks fantastic.
Work Upwards
Many kitchens have space between the upper wall cabinets and the ceiling. While some like to hang plates and decorations there, we suggest using this space as extra storage for larger dishware, slow cookers, or other extra items you don’t use every day. If you have enough room, you can also install taller wall cabinets to give you much more storage room. Wall cabinets are available in many different heights.
