How To Survive a Kitchen Renovation

by Steve Gilman ,Project/Operations Manager Builder Specialties

During a kitchen renovation, moving out of your house is typically not an option, however some do. Whether you are doing it yourself or are working with a contractor, here are some ideas on surviving a kitchen remodel.

Temporary “Plumbing”

Even if you eat out or do take out and use paper plates, you are going to eventually need some potable water to wash some dishes. If you have a bathroom on the same floor, that can work. You can also set up a temporary “sink” using a plastic tub on a stool or small table and a 5-gallon water jug with spigot, that can be purchased in many places.

Cooking

For cooking, use a microwave, toaster oven, and perhaps a hotplate. There are a wide range of hotplate models and prices. BBQ grilling is also a great option to minimize dirty dishes and clean up.

Dust

Using a plastic renovation barrier (such as ZipWall dust barrier), dust and dirt will still find their way onto every corner of your house. If you are going to stay in your home during a renovation, plan on living with some dust. To protect you and your family, we recommend storing dishes, utensils, and food in storage bins with covers. If your contractors need to come through the house to use the restroom or just performing their work, you can also lay down a floor protectant barrier, such as Ram Board or another solution. Your contractor should be able to provide these items. You may also wish to purchase an air purifier system. There are several quality brands available on the market. Check out the reviews online to find the best unit for you.

Lighting and Heating

Hopefully, you will not have to live without lights and heat for more than part of a day, but issues can and do happen. If your renovation is during the winter months and you will end up being without power and/or heat for a day or longer, you will need to make alternative preparations. If you have a wood stove or fireplace, that can take care of the heat part, especially to keep water pipes from freezing. Contractors can also come up with temporary propane heating solutions. If work is scheduled with enough advance notice, you could use the opportunity to treat yourself to a short stay at a nice hotel or other arrangement with friends or relatives. Living through a renovation is stressful enough. A little self-indulgence is okay! You’ve earned it!
